This group project functions as a bridge between philosophy and design, providing a novel viewpoint through the lens of speculative design. We investigate the life cycle within the context of design, focusing on Oyama's idea of the origin of things and informing ourselves through the philosophies of Dewey, Oyama, and Van Dijk. We begin redesigning a vending machine, an accessible object that symbolises everyday convenience, by applying these philosophical frameworks.
Our strategy entails abstracting and reimagining vending machine usage from a futuristic standpoint. By challenging conventional notions and questioning established norms, we stretch the limits of how design is traditionally executed and perceived. This initiative explores the realm of interdisciplinarity, fusing philosophy and design to offer novel solutions.
We investigate the complexities of the vending machine as a symbol of consumption and convenience through our collaborative efforts. By imbuing it with philosophical insights and speculative design principles, we hope to stimulate discussion and investigate new possibilities. This project not only provides a tangible result in the form of a redesigned vending machine, but it also functions as a thought-provoking investigation of design's potential to shape our everyday experiences.
